From across the "Pond" comes a detailed note from a Brittish writer,
who clearly is no fan of Donald Trump.
Carl Jarvis
block quote
The Brits have a way with words........
"This comment on a thread needs to stand on its own. Never have I
heard an analysis of Donald Trump put so precisely and presciently.
There is no name-calling, just a keen eye and sharp wit.
Someone on Quora asked "Why do some British people not like Donald
Trump?" Nate White, an articulate and witty writer from England wrote
this magnificent response."
Nate White replied:
"A few things spring to mind.
Trump lacks certain qualities which the British traditionally esteem.
For instance, he has no class, no charm, no coolness, no credibility,
no compassion, no wit, no warmth, no wisdom, no subtlety, no
sensitivity, no self-awareness, no humility, no honour and no grace -
all qualities, funnily enough, with which his predecessor Mr. Obama
was generously blessed.
So for us, the stark contrast does rather throw Trump's limitations
into embarrassingly sharp relief.
Plus, we like a laugh. And while Trump may be laughable, he has never
once said anything wry, witty or even faintly amusing - not once,
ever.
I don't say that rhetorically, I mean it quite literally: not once,
not ever. And that fact is particularly disturbing to the British
sensibility - for us, to lack humour is almost inhuman.
But with Trump, it's a fact. He doesn't even seem to understand what a
joke is - his idea of a joke is a crass comment, an illiterate insult,
a casual act of cruelty.
Trump is a troll. And like all trolls, he is never funny and he never
laughs; he only crows or jeers.
And scarily, he doesn't just talk in crude, witless insults - he
actually thinks in them. His mind is a simple bot-like algorithm of
petty prejudices and knee-jerk nastiness.
There is never any under-layer of irony, complexity, nuance or depth.
It's all surface.
Some Americans might see this as refreshingly upfront.
Well, we don't. We see it as having no inner world, no soul.
And in Britain we traditionally side with David, not Goliath. All our
heroes are plucky underdogs: Robin Hood, Dick Whittington, Oliver
Twist.
Trump is neither plucky, nor an underdog. He is the exact opposite of that.
He's not even a spoiled rich-boy, or a greedy fat-cat.
He's more a fat white slug. A Jabba the Hutt of privilege.
And worse, he is that most unforgivable of all things to the British: a bully.
That is, except when he is among bullies; then he suddenly transforms
into a snivelling sidekick instead.
There are unspoken rules to this stuff - the Queensberry rules of
basic decency - and he breaks them all. He punches downwards - which a
gentleman should, would, could never do - and every blow he aims is
below the belt. He particularly likes to kick the vulnerable or
voiceless - and he kicks them when they are down.
So the fact that a significant minority - perhaps a third - of
Americans look at what he does, listen to what he says, and then think
'Yeah, he seems like my kind of guy' is a matter of some confusion and
no little distress to British people, given that:
Americans are supposed to be nicer than us, and mostly are.
You don't need a particularly keen eye for detail to spot a few flaws
in the man.
This last point is what especially confuses and dismays British
people, and many other people too; his faults seem pretty bloody hard
to miss.
After all, it's impossible to read a single tweet, or hear him speak a
sentence or two, without staring deep into the abyss. He turns being
artless into an art form; he is a Picasso of pettiness; a Shakespeare
of shit. His faults are fractal: even his flaws have flaws, and so on
ad infinitum.
God knows there have always been stupid people in the world, and
plenty of nasty people too. But rarely has stupidity been so nasty, or
nastiness so stupid.
He makes Nixon look trustworthy and George W look smart.
In fact, if Frankenstein decided to make a monster assembled entirely
from human flaws - he would make a Trump.
And a remorseful Doctor Frankenstein would clutch out big clumpfuls of
hair and scream in anguish:
'My God… what… have… I… created?
If being a twat was a TV show, Trump would be the boxed set."

Just letting my thoughts roam on a snowy cold Sunday
It seems to me that far too often we working class Americans get our
fantasy world caught up in the real world.
This is no accident. We're schmoozed and shined by our Ruling Class.
And we are made to look with suspicion on those who act, think or look
different than we do. And through it all, there is dangled before us
a fantasy that if we do everything right, and our luck holds, we just
might rise like fine cream, to the top of the bottle. It's bogus.
Under Capitalism there is no such thing as, "Equal Opportunity". But
the Ruling Class continues to peddle that line.
Below is more of my thoughts which I posted to another group of long
suffering folk.
***
Smarter is not a word I'd assign to Donald Trump. Cunning. Crafty.
Brazen. Bald Face Liar. But not Smarter. Donald Trump is the face
of Capitalism. He grew up wrapped in all the nuances of double
dealing, conniving sneaky backroom dealing, lie swapping and all the
other "normal" activities that are part of the normal life of a
budding Capitalist.
We Working Class Folk were raised to believe that we play fair, that
we should turn the other cheek, that Love conquers All, that Right
makes Might, that a good deed will be returned ten fold.
That's our world. But the world According to Donald Trump is as
strange as a walk
on the Moon. It looks familiar, but nothing makes sense.
Think of suddenly being at a Soccer game. You know that this is some
sort of a team event. Players charge up and down the field. Fans
cheer and go nuts. It's all sort of familiar, but totally strange.
That's because you don't know the rules. Donald Trump and his kind
play by different rules. Often times they make up rules on the spur
of the moment, replacing them at will, as conditions require. We are
not in the presence of genius. We are simply on a different playing
field. Our game rules do not apply. Not if we want to win. And the
worst part of it all is that we have sent some fairly decent, honest
men and women out to do battle with the Trumpsters and their Ilk,
using our game rules. And what happens? The Ralph Nader's and the
Bernie Sanders are destroyed. The Obama's and the Clinton's survive
because they learned to play by the Capitalists Rules, which included
selling out their own people.
If we fool ourselves into thinking we can play their game and win, we
are joining the ranks of those "Suckers born every minute", and we'll
be ground under their Alligator Skin Boots. Democracy and Capitalism
cannot exist side by side. We want to believe that we can control it,
but if you check it out you will find that Capitalists can't control
it either.
Capitalism is a Pyramid structure. It depends on the masses at the
bottom in order for a few to live on the top. The very structure
prevents equal opportunity. All of those who work hard and live good
honest lives will never reach the top. Nor even anywhere near the
top.
And that is just the structure. We still have the "Human Factor" to
deal with. And worst of all, Capitalism is the perfect breeding
ground for "Greed"!

Re: [blind-democracy] The Venezuela Myth Keeping Us From Transforming Our Economy
Not since Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey brought their Three
Ring Circus to town has there been such amazing confusion. The big
difference is that the Circus was fun.
I am increasingly certain that Donald Trump will call for a state of
emergency, build his Idiot Wall, declare war on Venezuela, and proudly
lead us backward into that Magic Make Believe Land when America was

A Grand Stand for Justice: Or Just a Grand Stander?
This February 5 article from the Grays Harbor Daily World reports that
a man representing himself as Blind Justice is taking a stand toward
protecting our First Amendment Rights.
While I would not deny him the right to express himself in the manner
reported, I wonder if his actions will accomplish his goal? Taking a
solo stand does make a statement, but even Jesus had His 12 Apostles.
And even as the numbers grew, look how long the Roman Empire continued
before imploding.
Carl Jarvis
***
For months, an Aberdeen man who says he's motivated by First Amendment
freedoms has been testing local governments by showing up in their
offices with
no apparent business to conduct, then filming people with his phone
camera. Typically, it has made people uneasy and sometimes police have
been called.
Last week, a version of one of his tests resulted in him being
escorted from an Aberdeen City Council meeting.
Mike Nelson, who is sight impaired and sometimes refers to himself as
"Blind Justice," has been a watchdog of local governments since at
least last spring
when he protested Aberdeen's ordinance to restrict sitting and lying
down on sidewalks. That protest went several months with Nelson
sitting on sidewalks
around Aberdeen every day to make his point. Nelson films every
council meeting he attends, using his phone or a GoPro camera strapped
to his chest like
a body camera.
Over the past couple months, Nelson has filmed and posted dozens of
videos of what he calls an "audit" — visiting public agencies all
around Grays Harbor
County. He might enter the front office public space of a finance or
police department, for instance, to see if they allow him to stand
there and film.
When asked by an employee if they can help him, he often says he's
"just checking (the office) out," or "no, we're good." Some of the
videos are very popular,
with over 130,000 views on YouTube and most of the comments are in
support of him.
In an interview Friday, Nelson said his goal is to test if public
officials understand First Amendment rights, particularly his right to
film them in a
public place and to peacefully assemble. He said he also checks
whether places are accessible to people with disabilities.
"It's really just testing if the staff are familiar with the rights of
the people, and if they'll respect the rights of the people," said
Nelson. "If they're
unaware, it's a chance to inform them and know people have a right to
assemble, a right to the press, you can't ban cameras in a public
place.
Nelson carries a white cane to help him navigate and wears dark
glasses, but some of his distractor's are skeptical of his sight
loss.
The targets of the tests are often agitated by the filming.
In a video where he makes a long walk around the Port of Grays Harbor
facilities, an employee confronts him at an entry gate, and suggests
Nelson "can
clearly see him" as he moves around.
Nelson told The Daily World he's not totally blind, and can see some
color and light. He described it as most things looking like amorphous
blobs, like
a blurred kaleidoscope.
Nelson said he served in the military for 11 years and suffered
multiple brain injuries from explosions and falls that resulted in his
blindness. Nelson
said that after swearing an oath to protect the Constitution, his time
in the military made him question whether what he was doing helped
uphold it.
"Those years in the military, I never really processed what that
meant, or looked at the Constitution to ask, 'Am I upholding it? Are
my actions here in
war protecting the rights of the people?' I never really considered it
until the end," said Nelson. "I had to come to grips with, 'I'm not,
what I'm doing
is in violation and making it more dangerous and less free for
people.' That's why I sympathize, because I did it, and did horrendous
things after swearing
an oath. Likewise the people here who swore the oath are oblivious to
the Constitution."
Nelson said he hopes what he does helps shift public officials'
perception to better respect the rights of the public.
"Hopefully, the average person walking into a government facility will
have less orders, less restraints on their freedom, and won't be told
to put their
cellphone down," he said.

frivolous
Dear One and All,
I am shocked! Diego? Frivolous???
It does tickle my funny bone when I see comments where someone has
taken a bit of fluff to be serious. On the other hand, I'm never
sure if such responses themselves are serious. We really do depend
upon voice inflection and tone to convey what our words can't always
do.
But back to the Robot Shrink. We had a Robot in the White House once
upon a time. Can you guess who it was? He was a bland looking Robot
with a rather flat voice. I hope the newer models are more human
sounding. His "Handlers" tested him for years, during which he
learned to say one line, "At General Electric, Progress is our most
important product".
Finally he was sent to the Big Time, where he was given a new line.
"I'm from the government and I'm here to help." For 8 years he
repeated it. But he never did help the Working Class. Just his
Handlers.
No, I do not ever want to be stretched out on the couch and hear a
dull voice say, "Hell Oh. I am here. To help you. Please. do not.
be afraid. afraid. afraid. Afraid. afraid.".

Re: [blind-democracy] Re: The Saudi teen and Canada
Dear Mostafa,
Throughout recorded history Man has proposed many Beliefs regarding
how we came to be clinging to this little bit of gravel whirling
around a huge blast furnace.
This vast collection of theories should give us some indication that
we are merely guessing. And of course, our recorded history is based
on centuries of pre-recorded speculation. When we found that we could
not explain an occurrence, we created a God or a Spirit or an Evil
Serpent tempting us to go against the desires of our Created God. We
passed these stories along from one generation to the next,
embellishing them and creating additional stories to prove that they
really existed.
When a written language appeared, these stories were set in print.
Eventually the collection of stories became pronounced as Holy
Utterances from the Mouth of our Particular Deity
And yet, no one ever saw one of these Creations, nor did anyone see
the Deity sitting with pen in hand, before a Golden Ledger. We
imagined it. Has anyone ever located the clay tablets which Moses
supposedly brought down from the mountain?
Where is the original Koran? And who has kept the original Bible?
Perhaps, since our senses are so narrow and limited, perhaps there are
all sorts of Beings and Activities going on around us, and through us.
But we have not found a way to connect with any of them, so we are
able to create to our hearts content.
Personally I do not concern myself with attempting to convince anyone
that they are mistaken and I am correct. What I write is simply the
way I currently see my world. I am filled with contentment here in my
world. I can only hope you are content in yours. We'll never agree.
Nor will we ever need to agree. This "Human Experiment" has been a
disaster for more years than we've had Gods. Once Man became the
dominant animal life form, with the use of fire and tools and a vivid
imagination, Man embarked on the road to His own demise. And because
of Man's unique brain, He knows that his days are numbered if He
continues on this same road. He must change His ways...but so far He
can't. So Man has a fall back position. Man, and Man alone, has a
Life Beyond Life.
I say it's hokey. You say it is real.
One of us is right and one of us is wrong. End of discussion.
Cordially,
Carl Jarvis

Cordially,
Carl Jarvis

Fwd: Global Warming and Extreme Cold: How One Leads to the Other
Look to the South. War Clouds are gathering. Donald Trump will have
his war! How much more of this Media Clown can we afford?

"civilization".
PS.: Can you imagine the shocked look on God's Face when we all show
up at the Pearly Gate, back lit by the flaming inferno once called
Mother Earth?
