Well Richard, here's one definition of Christian Ethics. But I
repeat, I do not believe that in practice, such an animal exists
outside our imagination.

Christian ethics is a branch of
Christian theology
that defines
virtuous behavior
and
wrong behavior
from a Christian perspective.
Systematic theological
study of Christian ethics is called
moral theology.
Christian virtues are often divided into four
cardinal virtues
and three
theological virtues.
Christian ethics includes questions regarding
how the rich should act toward the poor,
how women are to be treated,
and the
morality of war.
Christian ethicists, like other ethicists, approach ethics from
different frameworks and perspectives. The approach of
virtue ethics
has also become popular in recent decades, largely due to the work of
Alasdair MacIntyre
and
Stanley Hauerwas.

Well Marsha...and All, my initial reaction is to suggest to you that
this idea of this nation being based on Christian Ethics is just one
more myth, fabricated by the Ruling Classes to use as one more Control
over the People.
In fact, if you dust off your old history books, you'll find that the
distant shores of North America called to the oppressed European
religious factions. As we understand the nature of religious cults,
each one has the complete, total true Word of God. This means that
all other cults are of Satan.
The smaller cults were in danger of being snuffed out, in the name of
the Lord, so they piled their Earthly possessions onto sailing ships
and took their chances upon God mercifully guiding them safely across
uncharted waters.
Those who made the trip safely immediately set up colonies that
allowed only their "True Word of God" to be preached. So our roots go
back to clusters of hostile Christians jockeying to push their true
gospel down the throats of everybody else.
But as the word spread that a new beginning was possible on the
distant shores of the "New World"...not so new to those folks already
living here, as the word spread, many persecuted folks of no
particular Faith began to sail across the Atlantic ocean to make a new
life for themselves. While not to the extent of the use of Australia,
nonetheless many unwanted folks perceived as trouble makers were also
shipped to our New World shores. It was from this mixture that the
United Colonies hammered out a document declaring their right to self
rule. Of course Christian Ethics were interwoven into this document,
but the question is, whose Christian Ethics were they? And how much
impact did those ethics have on how this new nation proceeded ? Like,
did such Ethics afford a more caring, loving relationship toward the
People Living Here prior to our invasion? Did we Bless them as we
burned their villages, raped their women, butchered their children and
enslaved what was left?
If we say that Christian Ethics are the practices of Believers, then
no such Ethics ever existed. If we say that Christian Ethics are some
higher level to be sought, then we have a very long reach to touch
them.
But to say that this, or any nation was built upon Christian Ethics is
to deny the slaughter that occurred when we Good and Faithful
Christians accepted this gift of a new world given to us by our Loving
God. Sort of reminds me of God's promise to bring the Jews home to
their Promised Land.
The only Ethics I ever knew were, Survival of the Fittest. If we
truly believe that God created the universe and the earth and all that
is therein, wouldn't you think that this system of the big eating the
little and the strong taking from the weak, would clue us as to what
sort of a mind our loving God has?
Just asking.
