In Grandma's day, naughty students were sat before the class on a high
stool with a dunce cap atop their pointed little heads.
Did this sort of negative discipline produce a healthy, loving
generation? Looking around the nation and the world, it's hard to
sell negative reinforcement as a training tool. So even if the child
hit another child with his cane, do we teach him a lesson by replacing
it with a floppy toy? What if he'd bitten the other child? Would we
replace his teeth with jelly beans? Or if he hit another with his
little fist? Why not just beat him and get it over with. At least
when he is an adult and faces the judge, we'll be able to explain why
his anti social behavior came about.
How many more thousands of years are we going to try to raise decent
people by beating or humiliating them?
Even an Agnostic, such as I am, recall what happened to the Christian
Movement when the Romans nailed Jesus to a cross, to teach his
followers a lesson. And nailing up those two thieves on either side
of Jesus sure taught us all never to steal.
Did the Jews learn humility and love by having their family members
tortured and gassed? Sure can't tell it from the way they are hugging
the Palestinians.
But that's a long way from simply teaching a little boy a lesson by
making a fool out of him. Isn't it?
