In my comments regarding the letter by Coates to his 15 year old son,
I remarked that we seem not to learn from history. Each time the
oppressed rise, they become the new oppressors, not the Saviors of the
People. This article by Chris Hedges has a familiar ring. If we were
to replace Corporate Capitalists with, British Tyrants, and rather
than saying Greeks, we said, Colonists, we might have a better idea of
what is happening to the Greeks government.
American colonists cried, "taxation without representation!" They
knew the feel of the Tyrant's boot on their throats. And so we would
suppose that once the Colonists threw off the heavy yoke of Tyranny,
they would resolve to treat all Americans equally. And so it seemed,
when the Great Constitution was drafted. But of course that document
forgot the women, the Slaves, the American Indians, All non-Whites,
and in fact, all working class who did not own Land.
But all of these disenfranchised folk got the privilege of sharing in
the operation of this wonderful free new nation.
Those early Landed Colonists formed a government that has taken good
care of their children, many times removed. Over 235 years of the
good life. While for many of us it has been hard times. Hard times
as far back as we can follow our family tree. We toil in order to eek
out a living, fearful that it could come crashing down at a moments
notice, while the profits our labor bring is vacuumed off to support
the comforts of the Ruling Class. These Elite are as much Tyrants as
were those long ago Lords of London. They are takers, not sharers.
And they keep us divided against ourselves.
But how can we avoid becoming the new Takers, if indeed we were to
rise up and replace our current tyrants? What are we doing
differently to ensure that we do not slide from one Master's iron grip
to that of another? Are we working to unite our fragmented Working
Class, bringing Blacks, Latinos, Asian, Women, Gays, Disabled,
bringing us all together to design a new People's Planet Earth? Are
we so brain washed that we will go to our poverty grave cheering our
Nation above all others? Or will we come to understand that nations
are just one more division, giving our Masters the control to turn us
against each other. And how quickly we can be turned. Remember those
wonderful French folk? They supported our efforts to break free from
the British Tyranny. They made a statue, a statue of Liberty, and
shipped it to us. But not so long ago the French dared to disagree
with the government they had helped support. We quickly denounced all
of the French. Declaring, "No more French fries. American Fries!."
How grown up that was. We should be embracing the French Working
Class instead of damning them. But it goes on and on. We allow
ourselves to be jerked this way and that. And now we are already into
our newest distraction, the upcoming Presidential Election.
I appreciate the Chris Hedges and the Barbara Ehrenreichs, those
fearless reporters on the front line, but where are the Planners,
those who can see into our future and design a new road map? Are we
all so conditioned that we can't break out of this strange world of
Alice and Wonderland?
