Blindness; a blessing?

Hi again Eric,

I still can't wrap my brain around this inspirational bit.  If people are inspired by me because I do something as a blind man, then I am probably reinforcing their notion that blind people are different than sighted people, and that our acts are somehow more wonderful than the same act by a sighted person.  That's not inspirational.  That's a put down to all blind people. 

Telling me that "you people are amazing" is another put down.  Someone who says that they are inspired by something I did, is really saying that they had a  pretty poor impression of blind people and my action is an exception. 

 

I have no problem being identified as a blind man, anymore than my friend does not care about being identified as a woman.  But I do not want what I do to be singled out as something marvelous because I am blind.
