Perspective on democracy

All Cave Dwellers,
From earliest indications we are, above all else that we might be, a family centered species.  To better protect our families we joined forces with other families.  We lived together, shared roots and game together and began dividing the labor among our members.  This did include those members who took over the leadership of the community.  But in assuming this role, or in taking it by means of superior strength, they also took on the responsibility of standing between their community and danger.  They did not sit in a guarded palace and send others to do their job.  That came later.
In a sense communities were governed by that dreaded word, "Socialism"  or, "Communism".
Still, the young men looked up to the strong leaders, despite the danger of their job.  Perhaps that created a need to become the Super Protector of all the families.  Or perhaps we men just have to jockey one another to become top dog, just as is true in other communal animals.
So we may have had these two forces from our very beginning.  The need to protect and the need to dominate.
The two will compliment one another just so long as the leader actually leads and is held responsible for the success or failure of the community.  An unwise leader will either be killed by invaders or cast aside by angry community members.
In the modern civilizations our leaders gather armies about them and even when they behave stupidly or greedily they cannot be touched.
So the original system worked okay, for the most part.  But of course we still have Greed to factor in.  Eventually the strong leader gathered a few goats around himself.  A young man wishing to take one of the leaders daughters to his living place might be required to show his intent by giving a gift to the leader.  Perhaps a goat or a woven basket, something of value to the leader.  Again, this arrangement worked pretty well just so long as the leader was putting his own life and reputation on the line.  But once a leader gathered enough together that he could begin offering items to his neighbors in order to have them do certain things for him, that is where the world took a wrong turn.
Could we have stopped it from happening?  Probably not, since it appears to be a part of that mixture we call, "Human Nature".
So our only hope is to take the leadership away from those who have become so corrupt, and begin a new leadership.  Of course that leadership will most likely become corrupt because of our Natural Nature, but we will once again take it back and start again.
And that my friends is how I read our own Constitution.  When government no longer serves the people it must be set aside.  Of course keep in mind that the current government is serving certain people very well.  If we like seeing all of our resources being gobbled up by the 1%, then let it alone.  But if it is getting under your skin then it is probably time to take leadership back.

Do you think that human greed is a result of Capitalism or is it part of
human nature? If greed, like altrusim, is part of our nature, then whatever
economic and social system we build, won't it assert itself? The same
question can be asked about the need for power and control.

The bottom line is the profit system we exist under.  It is the doorway
through which Greed enters.  Try as we may, we've not yet devised a control
over Greed.  A major piece of the problem is that the Greediest make the
laws which in turn protect their right to be Greedy.  I know of no person in
the ranks of the Working/Middle Class whose life has not been negatively
impacted by Greed.  But at the same time I know of few who have not
themselves been contaminated by this insidious addictive Monster.  Who among
us has not dreamed of success in terms of increased wealth and the power it
will buy?
Just a better paying job, a bit larger home, a newer car, a 52 inch TV, a
small cabin cruiser, a Piper Cub, a home in a gated community where we will
be safer, a yacht with a standby crew, a second home in the Islands, private
schooling for our children, personal attendants and house servants...
And so we buy a lottery ticket and dream our dreams.
We measure our success and our happiness by our wealth.  And we defend it as
"Natural".  After all, it's how we've done business for centuries.  The
truth is that it is not natural.  It is a corrupt system that has been
superimposed upon Nature.  And if we do not change it, in the end it will
destroy Nature and we will disappear from the Universe.
Remember the Bible?  It warns us that Man cannot serve two Masters.
We cannot continue to serve Greed and Nature.

Won't happen in your lifetime!

If the profit system is abolished then commercial advertising as a
free speech issue becomes moot.
