Blind People Seeking Jobs--Are We Better Off ThanTwenty Years Ago?

Subject: Blind People Seeking Jobs--Are We Better Off Now ThanTwenty Years Ago?

Frankly, for the average blind person, the 1940's through the 1960's were the Golden Years.  Production jobs and factory work was easier to secure and in the cities, public transportation was much better.  Radio was King in entertainment, so naturally all programs were audio described.

I think we as blind people are far better off with the advantages we receive through social networking and technology than we were 20-years ago, but having said that, I think the ada has done little to convince employers to hire the blind, and I think there are still lots of people who do not know the capabilities blind people could offer to an employer.

In the end, I don't think we are much better off than we were before, but perhaps a little bit.

I was intrigued by a post Mitch made yesterday, saying, if I'm paraphrasing correctly, that he thought that I was out of touch with what was needed by blind people seeking work in present time, and that I was operating from a 1980's '90's perspective.

Do people think things have gotten better or worse for us in the job market?  Has the work of our organizations paid off in making it easier for young blind people to get and maintain mainstream jobs in their chosen fields?  Do people feel that ADA has made significant difference?  Technology?  Social networking?

On a personal note, Mitch, you commented that I don't have credibility with you, coming from your strong H.R. background.  That notwithstanding, I need to say that I greatly respect your knowledge in H.R., not to mention your tremendous contributions to ACB.
