Abby,
forget the conspiracy theory.  We are at war.  The Working/Middle Class versus the Ruling Class(sometimes referred to as, The Upper Class).
This struggle has been going on longer than that historical day when King George III wrote in his diary "Nothing of importance occurred today.
The Upper Class pretty much held the upper hand(hence their name) until the Great Depression, followed by WW II.  The depression brought desperate people together, organizing labor unions in hope of fending off starvation.  The war brought in so much profit and united the nation to the point that the Corporate Bosses parted with some of their bootie just because there was so much of it laying around.  The unions saw their golden opportunity, and they brought their demands for a shorter work day, vacation pay, sick leave, paid medical and retirement benefits.  Even following the war there was much profit to be made from overseas sales to recovering nations, that the Bosses did not want to be distracted from grabbing all that they could.  After all, they knew full good and well that they had the ability to reign it in when they needed to.
Now they are cinching the rope around our collective necks.  We can either dangle there, swinging in the wind while they empty our pockets, or we can resist.
