it doesn't matter what you call yourself

It took me years as a totally blind man before I could say the word, Blind.  Newly blind folks will have to resolve it for themselves.  Some will come to terms with their blindness and others will not.  But by trying to "help them along" we run the risk of losing their support on more important issues.
In working with groups of older blind and low vision folks, I usually tell them that when people around you treat you as if you are blind, and if you find that you can no longer do your daily tasks with the amount of eyesight you have, then it doesn't matter what you call yourself, you are blind.
