Thoughts on educating our children.
What works best of all in educating our children is something that we would need to divert great amounts of dollars from killing and underwrite a national educational system.
Therefore, we will probably not see it set in motion.
We train a lot of people to be teachers. But I wonder how we are screening them these days. Back when I was in Education, I knew many fellow students who had taken teaching as a second choice. Some actually resented the fact that this would be their fate. And yet they scored high, academically.
We under pay our educators, provide classrooms that appear to have no standards, and we crowd too many children into them.
Anyone who can step back from thinking in terms of cost, will agree that a nurturing environment is the best setting for learning. Small, comfortable classes stafgfed by caring teachers. No bribes, just good old fashioned positive encouragement. No Dunces Cap. No abusive put-downs. None of this, "sit in your seats and don't make a sound unless you are spoken to".
Treat children like the adults you expect them to become. I curl up my toes at the First Grade teachers who talk baby talk to their students. And they talk that way to me, too.
I expected my children to grow up to be responsible, good, caring adults. And they did! I have a relative who beat her children, left them alone nights, told them over and over that they were no good. Can you guess how they turned out?
