to my blind Canadian friends

To my blind Canadian friends.

Here in the early light of Sunday morning, out on the Great Olympic Peninsula, a more rational Carl lifts his tousled head from the pillow, stumbles around building a fire, feeding Winston the Cat and creating that wonderful first cup of coffee.
In so mellow a mood I would remind myself that putting the Canadian National Institute for the Blind(CNIB) out of business is only half the job, and could actually make matters worse.  Unless the way blind Canadians propose to rid themselves of them,  is to build a better service.
For years I belonged to an organization that wanted nothing more than to destroy the Seattle Lighthouse for the Blind.  My caution was that we must have some replacement for those blind folks who depended on the Lighthouse for their living, such as it was.  Well, we didn't put them out of business, but we did keep at them until they began to take on a new look.  Today the same Lighthouse provides far better working conditions, better pay, and is now headed by a fairly progressive blind man.  In a sense, the Lighthouse replaced itself with the Lighthouse.
