We blind folk are "handled" by many sighted folks in the same manner as they "handle" the Colored people. Condescension, the little pat on the head or back. Using a nick name. Overly helpful. Subtle things that are like a giant slap to our face.
Of course everyone thought they liked Governor Paterson. How could anyone not like a blind man? But once he began acting like a real person they turned on him.
Governor Paterson may never understand that it was his blindness not his blackness that actually played against him.
