To a degree I agree with you. I've long believed that the working class tried to hide themselves as middle class. Probably out of a feeling of shame as well as the belief that if they behaved like middle class they'd become middle class. But of course all they managed to do was to disguise their true identity, never beginning to grapple with the real issues.
But at the same time I believe that there is a growing class of people in America simply called "The Poor". Too poor even to be called the poor class. These folks are not able to dress and act like rich people. Rags are rags no matter how clean.
